What is a Veterinary Specialist? To become board certified, a veterinarian must complete 3-4 years of extensive post-graduate training and experience, generally in the form of an internship or residency. Upon completing the training the veterinarian must pass a credential review as well as a lengthy examination. Upon completion and passing of the exam the individual becomes a diplomate of the specialty board or college, and is then considered to be board certified.
When should my pet see a specialist? The decision to see a specialist will be made by your primary care veterinarian. Specialists are seen for various reasons; cases requiring advanced knowledge or equipment are often referred to a specialist for diagnosis and treatment.
